Spes Machines (Pty) Ltd was founded in 1970, and has specialised in designing and manufacturing down-the-hole (DTH) or In-the-hole (ITH) drilling tools since 1980.

The factory is situated in Pretoria, South Africa in one of the industrial hubs alongside international manufacturers such as SA Breweries, BMW and Nissan.

The company has as its goal to become one of the leading designers and manufacturers of ITH rock drilling tools.

High-quality forgings are sourced from the UK for the bits. The heat-treatment process ensures a hard, tough and fatigue-resistant product of high performance.

Spes excels in designing and developing bits for the most arduous conditions and collaborates closely with suppliers and users to achieve this.

Powder Industries, a South African manufacturer of tungsten-carbide buttons, for example, has developed particular grades and button geometries to successfully meet the challenges.

The bits are widely used in applications such as drop-raise drilling in solid quartzites in the South African deep-level gold mines, blastholes in banded ironstones and iron ore and waterwells in aggressive sandstones.

Spes has innovative bit designs such as bits with side-flushing and two-piece hole-openers with replaceable drill heads.

The Factory

Our team

The factory is equipped with modern CNC turning and machining centres.

Components are measured and checked in a temperature-controlled metrology room.

Shot peening is applied to components individually in a purpose-built machine.

The company employs highly skilled staff and quality is managed to ISO 9000 standards.

Trained engineers use sophisticated commercial and proprietary computer software in the design, development and manufacture of the products
